Console table
This rare console table or sideboard was produced in Denmark during the 1940s by an unknown designer. The piece is constructed from solid and veneered mahogany, finished in a medium brown tone with a subtle reddish cast characteristic of the wood species. The tabletop features a triple-stepped edge profile that adds definition while subtly referencing classical detailing.
The front is symmetrically arranged with five drawers: three larger central drawers interspersed with two narrower ones. Each drawer is fitted with original brass bail handles mounted on turned escutcheons. The legs are square in section and vertically fluted on all four sides, tapering subtly toward the base. This fluting continues into the apron but stops gently just below the drawer line, reinforcing the table’s neoclassical influence.
The overall design exhibits architectural clarity, balanced proportions, and restrained ornamentation, aligning it with early Scandinavian interpretations of modern classicism rather than the organic modernism typical of the mid-century period. The table is in good vintage condition, showing signs of use consistent with age, including minor wear, light scratches, and a mature patina on the mahogany surfaces. The drawers operate smoothly, and the brass hardware retains its original finish with some minor oxidation and wear. There are no visible structural damages or repairs.
The table measures 169 centimeters in width, 41 centimeters in depth, and 76 centimeters in height (approximately 66.5 x 16.1 x 29.9 inches).
