Daybed
This rare mid-century daybed, likely produced in Denmark during the 1960s by an unknown designer, reflects the Scandinavian modernist emphasis on craftsmanship, functionality, and natural materials. The frame is constructed from solid teak, featuring a warm, even grain with subtle variations that enhance its natural beauty. The daybed’s low, horizontally oriented structure imparts a calm, architectural presence.
The backrest incorporates an inclined support with tightly woven cane infill in a classic square pattern, tensioned within a finely joined teak frame. A distinctive design feature is the gently angled backrest, which includes an integrated handle cut-out—suggesting modularity or adjustability. The original seat and back cushions are upholstered in ribbed wool fabric in a burnt orange tone, complementing the teak frame and emphasizing the warm color palette typical of the period.
Construction is minimal and precise, with vertically and horizontally joined members softened by rounded edges and sculpted joint details. The daybed converts from a seating position with the angled backrest to a fully extended flat configuration, enhancing its versatility as both a lounge and sleeping surface.
The piece is in very good vintage condition, exhibiting light, age-appropriate wear on the frame and cane, and minimal signs of use on the original fabric, which remains intact with strong color saturation.
Dimensions measure 86 cm wide (33.9 inches), 167 cm deep (65.7 inches) in lounge position, and 198 cm (77.9 inches) fully extended. The height is 82 cm (32.3 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches). This daybed embodies mid-century Scandinavian ideals of understated luxury through honest materials and meticulous craftsmanship.
