Daybed
This rare Danish daybed from the 1950s is characterized by its geometric frame and distinctive V-shaped legs. The construction is executed in solid teak, a wood valued for its durability, fine grain, and rich warm color, which became a hallmark of Scandinavian mid-century furniture production. The structural detailing of the legs not only provides stability but also contributes to the sculptural quality of the design, balancing lightness with strength.
The daybed has been newly reupholstered in Kvadrat fabric, a textile manufacturer founded in Denmark in 1968 and known for its high-quality wool fabrics that are frequently used in modern and contemporary furniture. The surface is completed with a loose black leather pillow, serving as a headrest and introducing a subtle material contrast. This combination highlights the Nordic tradition of pairing natural woods with tactile, durable textiles and leathers.
Mid-century Scandinavian design emphasized clarity of form, craftsmanship, and functionality. Daybeds such as this one were part of a broader modernist movement that sought to merge living spaces with multifunctional furniture, where sleeping, lounging, and seating could be accommodated in a single piece. The understated, horizontal form reflects these principles, designed to complement rather than dominate an interior.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and a natural patina consistent with age. The teak frame shows subtle wear that speaks to its history while retaining its strength and character, while the upholstery ensures continued usability in a contemporary setting.
