Einar Bäckström floor lamp

Rare floor lamp designed by Einar Bäckström and produced by Einar Bäckströms Metallvarufabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp combines brass with a black leather-wrapped stem and a newly made textile shade, creating a refined contrast between warm metal, dark leather and softly diffused light.

The lamp measures 134.5 cm (53 inches) in overall height. Its new conical shade measures 22 cm (8.7 inches) in diameter and 25 cm (9.8 inches) in height. The shade directs light downward while allowing the textile surface itself to glow warmly when illuminated.

A circular brass base supports the exceptionally slender upright. The lower section of the stem is tightly wrapped in black leather with a distinctive spiral construction, introducing a tactile element to an otherwise restrained metal structure. Above, a shaped brass fitting transitions into a narrow curved brass arm that extends toward the light source. The simple arc gives the lamp an elegant, almost drawn quality when seen in profile.

Brass base is stamped with the Einar Bäckström factory mark, the model number 5737 and “MADE IN SWEDEN”, providing clear identification of the manufacturer and model. Einar Bäckströms Metallvarufabrik was a Swedish manufacturer associated with finely executed decorative metalwork and lighting, and the combination of brass and leather seen here is characteristic of the sophisticated material contrasts found in Swedish interiors of the mid-20th century.

The lamp is in good vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with age. The original brass components retain light surface wear and patination, particularly to the base, while the black leather wrapping remains an important decorative feature of the stem.
