Ejner Larsen & Aksel Bender Madsen chairs
This is a very rare set of four dining chairs, model 46, designed by Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen and produced by Brande Møbelindustri in Denmark during the 1950s. The design exemplifies the principles of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, emphasizing refined craftsmanship, ergonomic comfort, and a harmonious balance between materials.
The chairs are constructed from a combination of teak and oak, a pairing that enhances both durability and visual contrast. The teak backrest is organically sculpted, featuring a central cutout that enhances flexibility and support. The curved form of the backrest seamlessly integrates with the oak frame, which has been carefully shaped and tapered for structural integrity and aesthetic refinement. The slightly angled legs contribute to the chair’s stability while maintaining a lightweight appearance.
Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen were two of Denmark’s most respected designers, known for their attention to detail and commitment to functional beauty. Their collaboration produced numerous celebrated pieces, characterized by subtle curves and an emphasis on comfort. Brande Møbelindustri, the manufacturer, was a Danish furniture producer recognized for its high standards of joinery and finish. The company collaborated with several leading designers of the period to create furniture that adhered to the ideals of Danish modernism.
The dimensions of each chair are 50 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height (19.7 x 19.7 x 30.7 inches), with a seat height of 41 cm (16.1 inches). The chairs remain in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of wear consistent with age.
