Erik Höglund ashtray
This rare ashtray was designed by Erik Höglund and produced by Boda in Sweden during the 1960s, exemplifying mid-century Scandinavian design. The piece combines industrial and organic materials, featuring a tall, slender wrought iron stand with a circular base that supports a round iron frame holding a molded glass ashtray. The glass insert is distinguished by Höglund’s signature embossed patterns, which add a tactile and visual depth to the design.
Erik Höglund (1932–1998) was a pioneering Swedish glass artist and designer renowned for his innovative approach to glassmaking. During his tenure at Boda Glasbruk, he introduced expressive, textured, and often rustic elements that departed from the prevailing smooth and polished glass aesthetics. Höglund’s work frequently integrated metal and other materials, creating functional yet sculptural objects that continue to be highly sought after by collectors.
This ashtray reflects Höglund’s distinctive style, merging robust materials with a handcrafted look. The wrought iron base has developed a natural patina that underscores its vintage character, while the thick glass insert remains in good condition with only minor signs of use.
The ashtray measures 16 cm in diameter and 41.5 cm in height (6.3 by 16.3 inches), combining sculptural form with practical function in a striking design.
