Erik Kirkegaard armchair
This rare armchair was designed by Erik Kirkegaard and produced by Høng Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. It is an elegant representation of mid-century Danish craftsmanship, distinguished by its refined proportions, sculptural form, and warm materiality. The design unites functional ergonomics with a sophisticated structural rhythm, resulting in a chair that is both visually balanced and exceptionally comfortable.
The frame is executed in solid rosewood, displaying a deep reddish-brown tone with rich natural grain variation and a subtle luster. The armrests, gently curved and finely sculpted, flow seamlessly into the chair’s structural supports, demonstrating precise joinery and attention to tactile quality. The seat and backrest are upholstered in original black leather, which has developed a beautiful surface patina through use and time. The leather retains its suppleness, showing an appealing contrast between smooth and worn areas that testify to the chair’s authentic age and use.
The overall silhouette is characterized by its lightness and clarity, with open sides and elegantly tapered legs that convey both stability and visual delicacy. The chair’s ergonomic shaping reflects Kirkegaard’s sensitivity to comfort and form, allowing for relaxed seating without compromising structural integrity or aesthetic restraint.
Erik Kirkegaard (1926–2013) was known for his ability to blend modern industrial precision with the organic warmth of traditional Danish woodworking. His work for Høng Stolefabrik is particularly noted for its harmonious proportions and expressive yet subtle craftsmanship—hallmarks of the Danish modern movement of the postwar period.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition with signs of age and a fine patina throughout the leather and wood surfaces.
