Information

This rare flatweave carpet, model “Korall brun” was designed by Erik Lundberg and produced by Vävaregården in Sweden during the 1950s. The design presents a bold and abstract expression of mid-century Scandinavian textile art, characterized by a pixelated or tessellated central motif rendered in ochre, burnt orange, white, beige, dark brown, and black tones. These irregular geometric forms appear as a dense pattern concentrated at the center and subtly dissolving into the surrounding solid brown field, which frames the composition. The pattern’s structure suggests a coral-like organic complexity rendered through a modernist visual language.

The rug is executed in a flatweave (rölakan) technique, which is typical of high-quality Swedish textile production during the mid-20th century. The craftsmanship is evident in the precision of the woven forms, the clarity of the color transitions, and the tightness of the weave. The piece is bordered with natural fringes on both ends, and it features a small colored monogram woven into the field, a typical stylistic and authorship detail for this period and production.

Erik Lundberg (1918–1982) was a Swedish designer and textile artist known for his work in pattern design and color theory. He created several noted rug and textile designs during the mid-20th century, often with abstract or nature-inspired themes expressed in geometric abstraction. His works reflect the Scandinavian interest in uniting craft traditions with modernist ideals of form and function.

Vävaregården was a respected Swedish weaving workshop known for producing artist-designed rugs and tapestries with an emphasis on quality materials and skilled handcraft. Active during the height of Sweden’s textile renaissance, the workshop collaborated with several leading designers of the era to create limited production works that exemplify the region’s artisanal excellence.

The carpet remains in good vintage condition, with clear signs of usage and age-consistent patina, including minor surface wear that does not detract from its visual presence or structural integrity. It measures 247 centimeters in width and 170 centimeters in depth, which corresponds to approximately 97.2 inches wide by 66.9 inches deep. This scale makes it suitable for use as a central textile in an interior or as a wall-mounted decorative artwork. The piece reflects a distinct intersection of Swedish textile tradition and post-war modernist abstraction.
