Erik Tidstrand table lamp

This rare table lamp, designed by Erik Tidstrand and produced in the 1930s by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden, is a distinguished example of early Scandinavian modern design. Embodying a harmonious synthesis of function, material richness, and refined detailing, the lamp reflects both the transitional aesthetic of the interwar period and the enduring values of Swedish craftsmanship.

The lamp is composed of a dome-shaped shade in green lacquered metal, with a subtly curved profile that diffuses light evenly across a surface while directing it downward. The soft satin finish of the lacquer provides a subdued yet elegant contrast to the warm brass components that define the structural and decorative elements of the piece.

A fluted stem in solid mahogany rises from the circular brass base, adding vertical rhythm and natural texture. The rich tone and fine grain of the mahogany complement the brass and green lacquer, forming a triadic palette of wood, metal, and color that is both classic and visually compelling. The mahogany shaft is finely turned, demonstrating the attention to material and form that characterizes Tidstrand’s work for Nordiska Kompaniet.

The lamp is fitted with two E27 sockets beneath the shade, providing a broad and balanced light output. When illuminated, the green enamel interior softly reflects the glow of the bulbs, offering ambient lighting ideal for desks, reading corners, or bedside tables. The brass finial at the top of the shade is delicately shaped, serving as both a functional fastener and a decorative flourish that underscores the lamp’s artisanal detail.

Erik Tidstrand, active in the first half of the 20th century, was known for his association with Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), one of Sweden’s most prestigious department stores and design producers. His lighting designs often blended classical influences with emerging modernist principles, making them both elegant and accessible.
