Ernst Kühn dining table
This rare and finely crafted dining table was designed by Ernst Kühn and produced by Lysberg Hansen & Therp in Copenhagen during the 1950s. It is a distinguished example of Danish mid-century design, demonstrating the blend of formal refinement and material richness characteristic of the Scandinavian high modernist tradition.
The table features a circular to oval expandable form, composed of richly figured rosewood with deep, linear grain patterning across the surface. The top exhibits a warm and polished tone with subtle variations in the wood that highlight its natural texture. The four conical legs are also constructed in solid rosewood and terminate in polished brass sabots, which lend both protection and a subtle decorative accent to the otherwise restrained profile.
This piece is equipped with multiple extension leaves, allowing the table to transform from a compact circular format to a generous oval, suitable for accommodating larger gatherings. The extension mechanism is integrated discreetly beneath the apron and includes an additional central leg for structural support when fully extended. The form is both functional and elegant, with softly rounded corners and tapered transitions that maintain visual harmony at all scales.
Ernst Kühn was a Danish architect and furniture designer known for his refined and often bespoke works produced during the mid-20th century. His furniture often demonstrates a focus on proportion, understated detail, and material integrity. Pieces designed by Kühn and executed by leading cabinetmakers such as Lysberg Hansen & Therp reflect a particularly exclusive segment of Scandinavian design, where production values met the expectations of discerning private and royal clients.
Lysberg Hansen & Therp was a renowned Copenhagen-based firm operating from the late 19th century and well into the 20th, serving as Royal Purveyor (Kongelig Hofleverandør) and furnishing both public institutions and private homes. Known for high-quality production, often in collaboration with prominent designers, their workshop at Bredgade 3 was a centerpiece of Danish cabinetmaking tradition. The presence of the maker’s label on this piece attests to its provenance and craftsmanship.
The table is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of previous use consistent with age. It has been fully restored, including refinishing of the wood surfaces and polishing of the brass feet. All mechanisms are functional, and the piece is structurally sound.
