Information

This rare armchair was designed by Eskild Pontoppidan and produced by the Danish cabinetmaker Ludvig Pontoppidan in 1962. The chair features a sculptural and organic form, highlighted by a curved backrest that seamlessly integrates with the armrests, creating a fluid and cohesive silhouette. The solid oak frame provides a sturdy and durable foundation, while the seat and backrest are upholstered in cognac-colored leather, which has developed a rich patina through natural aging.

The chair is in good vintage condition, showing visible signs of use that add character and authenticity. There is a repair present on one armrest, and the leather upholstery exhibits a natural aging process, which enhances the piece’s appeal as a well-preserved example of mid-century craftsmanship.

Eskild Pontoppidan’s design embodies Scandinavian modernism, focusing on refined craftsmanship, organic shapes, and functional elegance. Ludvig Pontoppidan, a respected Danish cabinetmaker, was known for producing high-quality furniture with meticulous artisanal methods, often collaborating with designers who emphasized materiality and structural integrity.

This armchair exemplifies the Danish mid-century aesthetic by balancing elegant proportions with a tactile, lived-in quality. The combination of warm oak and aged leather creates a timeless, inviting presence, making it a distinguished piece of handcrafted Scandinavian furniture from the period.

The chair measures 69.5 centimeters in width, 69 centimeters in depth, and 71.5 centimeters in height (27.4 x 27.2 x 28.1 inches), with a seat height of 44 centimeters (17.3 inches).
