Eyvind Beckman cabinet
This rare cabinet was designed by Swedish architect and designer Eyvind Beckman and produced in Sweden in 1952. The cabinet exemplifies the principles of Scandinavian modernism through its clear geometric structure, refined proportions, and carefully balanced ornamentation. The piece demonstrates both visual rigor and decorative richness without compromising its functional clarity.
The cabinet is constructed in solid and veneered teak, presenting a warm golden-brown hue with a consistent grain pattern throughout. The front facade features a repeated carved motif of vertical panels, each bordered and centered with geometric keyhole and arrowhead-inspired elements. This rhythm of recessed carvings generates a patterned surface that plays with shadow and texture, lending the otherwise flat planes a quiet complexity. The doors are equipped with recessed locks and brass hinges, maintaining a minimalist exterior.
The interior reveals a precisely structured layout composed of open shelving and a suite of pull-out drawers. The drawers are made of a lighter wood, contrasting the teak framework and highlighting the high level of cabinetmaking. The cabinet stands on an integrated frame with square legs and side stretchers, which contribute structural stability while also lightening the overall visual mass of the piece.
Eyvind Beckman (1903–1975) was a Swedish designer known for his furniture and interior architecture. His work typically merged traditional woodworking methods with the clarity of Scandinavian modernism, often characterized by restrained decoration and finely resolved detailing. This cabinet from 1952 is a representative example of his mastery of proportion, surface rhythm, and practical internal design.
The cabinet is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age, including minor surface wear and patina, particularly on the doors and frame. These traces are consistent with the piece’s age and use and are well integrated into the overall appearance.
