Flatweave carpet
This large mid-century flatweave carpet was produced in Sweden during the 1950s and bears the monogram “CB” woven into one corner. While the designer remains unidentified, the initials suggest the work of an individual artisan or a smaller weaving atelier known for its geometric textile production. The carpet represents a strong example of the Swedish tradition of flatweave (röllakan) design that thrived in the postwar era.
The composition is structured around a symmetrical geometric motif formed by repeated cross-shaped patterns. These tessellated forms are arranged in a radial and grid-based organization, typical of Nordic modernist textile approaches where visual rhythm and color harmony take precedence over figurative elements.
The palette centers on cool blue tones, shifting from pale ice blue at the edges toward deeper ultramarine and cobalt tones in the interior. These are interspersed with a secondary grid of magenta-purple accents that create a dynamic chromatic contrast. The background weft appears as a light neutral beige or off-white, lending the design an open, luminous character. Subtle orange weft ends at the selvedges add a thin frame of warmth and complete the composition.
The piece is woven in wool using a traditional flatweave technique that results in a thin, durable textile with identical appearance on both sides. Wear and patina are present in the surface, including mild irregularities, which are consistent with age and use. These contribute to the authenticity and tactile depth of the piece.
This rug is characteristic of Scandinavian textile production in the mid-20th century, when handwoven carpets were central to interior architecture and played a functional and aesthetic role in domestic spaces. The anonymous signature “CB” and careful execution suggest a professionally trained weaver working within the Swedish craft guild system.
