Folke Jansson sofa

This rare two-seat sofa model “Orion” was designed by Folke Jansson and produced by SM Wincrantz in Sweden during the 1950s. It is an archetypal example of Swedish mid-century modern design, reflecting both the sculptural elegance and functional clarity that defined the Scandinavian design movement of that era.

The sofa features a deep cobalt blue wool upholstery over the entire frame, contrasted by a removable seat cushion in a pale cream fabric. This juxtaposition highlights the low-slung, curved profile of the piece while providing a visual break that emphasizes the generous seat. The armrests are accented with solid birch inserts that extend into tapered, turned birch legs ending in polished brass ball feet—an uncommon detail that adds subtle sophistication and lift to the design.

Structurally, the sofa presents a slightly concave backrest that transitions fluidly into the arm supports, creating a cocoon-like seating experience. The proportions are compact yet spacious enough for two people, making it suitable for both residential and public interiors. Folke Jansson (1920–1984) was a Swedish sculptor and designer known for his work in furniture during the postwar modernist period. Jansson gained international recognition during the 1950s and 1960s for his imaginative yet restrained compositions, often collaborating with Swedish manufacturers committed to high standards of craftsmanship.

The producer, SM Wincrantz, was a Swedish furniture company known for small-scale but high-quality production during the mid-20th century. Pieces bearing the SM Wincrantz label, as this one does beneath the seat frame, are sought after for their rarity and execution. Their collaborations with designers like Jansson yielded distinctive Scandinavian works that are now prized by collectors.

The condition of this piece is very good vintage, with small signs of age and use consistent with careful restoration. The frame is solid, and the upholstery is new and professionally executed. Brass ball feet show only light surface patina, enhancing the vintage character of the piece.
