Frits Henningsen dining chairs
This is a rare and cohesive set of eight dining chairs designed and produced by Frits Henningsen, one of Denmark’s most revered cabinetmakers and designers, active during the early and mid-20th century. These chairs date to the 1940s and exemplify Henningsen’s commitment to craftsmanship, elegance, and timeless functionality. They are constructed from solid Cuban mahogany, a tropical hardwood prized for its durability, fine grain, and rich reddish-brown hue, which has darkened gracefully over time.
Each chair features a gently curved backrest with five vertical slats, framed by softly rounded upper and side rails. The rear legs are subtly splayed for both visual balance and structural stability, while the front legs are straight and tapered. The proportions are carefully considered, with an upright but accommodating back angle and generous seat width. The silhouette is understated yet refined, reflecting a classical sensibility reinterpreted through a Scandinavian lens.
The seats retain their original natural leather upholstery, which has developed a warm patina consistent with age and use. The leather is a light cognac tone, with visible creases and wear marks that underscore the authenticity and character of the original materials. The upholstery is tightly fitted, and the slightly domed seat pad provides comfort without compromising the chair’s sculptural form.
Frits Henningsen was known not only for designing but also for producing his own pieces in his Copenhagen workshop, adhering to a philosophy that rejected industrial production in favor of artisanal quality. He was heavily influenced by French Empire and British 18th-century furniture but always interpreted these traditions with clarity and restraint, resulting in objects that are at once classic and modern.
This particular set remains in good vintage condition, structurally sound and with surfaces that show age-appropriate wear but no repairs or alterations. The craftsmanship, joinery, and finish are exemplary of high-end Danish cabinetmaking in the 1940s.
Each chair measures 48.5 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 81 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm (approximately 19.1 x 19.7 x 31.9 inches, SH: 16.9 inches). A matching dining table in a corresponding wood and style is also available, underscoring the ensemble’s integrity and original context. This set represents a rare opportunity to acquire work by one of Denmark’s most respected furniture makers, offering both functional elegance and historical depth.
