Grete Jalk coffee table
This rare coffee table, designed by Grete Jalk and produced by Glostrup Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s, is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship. Made from rosewood, it features a rich, warm tone with a highly figured grain that exemplifies the premium materials typical of Danish modern furniture.
The table has a rectangular top with gently rounded edges, supported by four slightly tapered cylindrical legs that contribute to its elegant profile. Below the tabletop, a secondary shelf composed of evenly spaced wooden slats offers practical storage while maintaining an open and airy appearance. This slatted shelf balances lightness with structural strength, enhancing the table’s functional and aesthetic qualities.
Grete Jalk was a prominent Danish designer known for combining sculptural form with everyday practicality. Her work often embraced organic shapes and meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in furniture that was both beautiful and durable. Glostrup Møbelfabrik, the manufacturer, was respected for producing high-quality pieces that embodied the ideals of Danish modernism.
The table is in good vintage condition, showing typical signs of use consistent with its age. Its dimensions are 160.5 cm in width, 59.5 cm in depth, and 50.5 cm in height (approximately 63.2 x 23.4 x 19.9 inches).
