Gunnar Ander fire tools
This is a sculptural mid-century modern fire tool set designed by Swedish designer Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. The set is notable for its refined balance of elegance and utility, showcasing the signature decorative minimalism that characterized Ander’s collaboration with Ystad Metall.
The set comprises a duo of fire tools—shovel and poker —each formed in blackened iron with polished brass handles. The handles are shaped with circular loops for easy gripping and hanging, and they are finished with a warm brass tone that contrasts effectively with the matte black shafts. The hooks integrated into the central column are also brass and are styled with curved forms evocative of neoclassical motifs, blending formal aesthetics with practical support.
The stand itself is constructed from black iron and features a circular base dish supported by tripod-style splayed legs. This base acts both as a structural anchor and a collector for ash or residue from the tools. The arrangement of the tools on the stand is symmetrical and deliberate, contributing to the object’s strong sculptural presence when not in use. Each tool slots cleanly into its designated hook, which is integrated into the vertical central shaft. The height and spacing are carefully designed for ergonomic handling and display.
Gunnar Ander, known for his work across lighting and decorative objects, was an important figure in Swedish mid-century design. His work for Ystad Metall, one of the leading producers of decorative metalware in Sweden, emphasized material contrast and refined craftsmanship.
The dimensions of the set are 68 cm in height, 35 cm in width, and 23 cm in depth, corresponding to approximately 26.8 x 13.8 x 9.1 inches. The set is in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with age, including slight patina to the iron elements and gentle wear to the brass.
