Gunnar Myrstrand side table
This rare side table with integrated storage box was designed by Gunnar Myrstrand and produced by Källemo in Sweden during the 1960s. The piece is executed in rosewood, exhibiting a vivid and expressive grain with alternating dark brown, warm reddish, and near-black streaks. The natural variation of the wood is consistently used across the surfaces, giving the object a cohesive yet visually dynamic appearance.
The construction consists of a rectilinear storage box mounted on a slender, open stand with square-section legs and connecting stretchers. The upper section functions as a box with a hinged lid, beneath which two shallow pull-out drawers are integrated into the front. The drawers and lid are fitted with discreet, solid wood pulls, and the box corners are assembled using exposed finger joints, emphasizing craftsmanship and structural clarity. The interior is lined with deep blue textile, providing contrast to the rosewood and indicating its intended use for storing smaller personal objects.
Gunnar Myrstrand was a Swedish designer known for his refined approach to furniture design, often combining architectural clarity with carefully considered details. His work from the mid-century period frequently explores modularity and multifunctional furniture, where practical requirements are resolved through precise construction rather than decorative elements. This piece reflects those principles through its compact footprint, combined storage solutions, and restrained geometry.
Källemo is a Swedish manufacturer recognized for producing high-quality furniture in collaboration with designers who emphasized material integrity and craftsmanship. During the mid-20th century, Källemo worked with solid woods and traditional joinery techniques while maintaining a modern design language. Their production often resulted in relatively small series, contributing to the rarity of pieces such as this one.
The side table is in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of use consistent with age. These include subtle surface marks and light wear to the finish, while the structure remains solid and the moving parts function as intended. The rosewood has developed a well-preserved patina, enhancing the depth of the grain.
The dimensions are 49 cm in width, 35.5 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height. This corresponds to approximately 19.3 inches wide, 14.0 inches deep, and 28.3 inches high.
