Information

This is a ceramic bowl, model ARO, designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1960s. The bowl is characterized by its asymmetrical organic form with a gently flared rim that curves upward at opposing ends. The body of the bowl is shallow and elliptical, tapering elegantly down to a small circular foot that provides subtle elevation and stability.

The glaze exhibits a deep amber-to-brown tonal range, with the surface transitioning from a mottled, earthy brown at the base toward a vibrant, radiating amber pattern at the interior walls. This radial pattern, resembling brushwork or crystalline flame effects, adds textural depth and a dynamic visual rhythm to the bowl. The outer surface reflects similar hues but with a more subdued vertical streaking, enhancing the vertical profile of the object. The base bears the impressed Rörstrand hallmark with the three-crown emblem, along with Nylund’s monogram “GN” and the model code “ARO”.

Gunnar Nylund, one of the foremost figures in Scandinavian ceramic design, served as artistic director at Rörstrand for several decades. His design ethos emphasized naturalistic form, minimalist composition, and innovative glazing. Nylund was especially recognized for pioneering matte and flame-like glazes and for bringing a sculptural quality to industrially produced ceramics. His work bridged the disciplines of studio ceramics and functional design, influencing the trajectory of mid-century Scandinavian decorative arts.

Rörstrand, established in 1726, is one of Europe’s most historic ceramics manufacturers. The firm’s collaboration with Nylund in the mid-20th century produced a range of stoneware and earthenware pieces that exemplified modernist principles while preserving material richness and artisanal integrity.

This example is in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of use and age. It represents mid-century Scandinavian design through its combination of refined form, controlled asymmetry, and complex glazing.

The bowl measures 16 cm in width, 12 cm in depth, and 8 cm in height, corresponding approximately to 6.30 inches wide, 4.72 inches deep, and 3.15 inches high.
