Information

This ceramic bowl, model AXK, was designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand in Sweden. The piece is an excellent example of Nylund’s refined modernist aesthetic and his deep understanding of glazes and form. Executed in stoneware, it displays a softly asymmetrical shape with a fluid, organic contour, typical of his mid-century work.

The surface features a complex glaze in shades of dark brown, black, and ochre, producing a mottled, almost metallic effect that varies subtly across the curved form. The interior transitions from deep umber tones at the rim to a lighter, luminous center, highlighting the depth of the glaze. The base is inscribed with the Rörstrand mark, the three crowns of Sweden, and the designer’s initials GN along with the model code AXK.

Gunnar Nylund, one of Sweden’s most renowned ceramicists, worked for Rörstrand from the 1930s through the 1950s. His designs often combined sculptural precision with experimental glazes, balancing modern functionalism with artistic craftsmanship. The AXK model exemplifies this approach, merging simple geometry with a tactile, richly toned glaze that reveals the clay’s natural texture beneath the surface.

The bowl is in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. The glaze remains well-preserved with no significant defects, maintaining its original depth and luster.

Dimensions: width 27 cm (10.6 in), depth 23.5 cm (9.3 in), height 16 cm (6.3 in).
