Information

This ceramic bowl, model ARO, was designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1960s. Crafted from stoneware, the bowl features a finely executed hare’s fur glaze, displaying deep olive green tones that transition into warm amber highlights, particularly where the glaze thins near the upper rim. The surface is subtly textured, enhancing the sense of movement and material depth. Its asymmetric form presents a flowing, organic curvature that rises from a narrow circular foot to an elliptical rim with opposing lifted edges, giving the piece a dynamic and sculptural presence.

The bowl is in very good condition, with no visible damage or restoration and only minor wear consistent with its age. Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) was a seminal figure in Swedish mid-century design and served as artistic director at Rörstrand from the 1930s through the 1950s. His work is celebrated for its restrained modernism, organic shapes, and distinctive glaze techniques—especially matte and hare’s fur finishes—that became hallmarks of Rörstrand’s production under his guidance.

Founded in 1726, Rörstrand has a long-standing tradition in ceramic production and played a pivotal role in the development of Scandinavian modernist design. During the postwar period, the company became renowned for artist-led studio production that skillfully balanced industrial design with artisanal craftsmanship.

The bowl measures 16 cm in width, 12.5 cm in depth, and 8 cm in height, approximately 6.3 x 4.9 x 3.1 inches.
