Information

This is a sculptural stoneware vase from the “Caolina” series, designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. The vase features an organically abstract form, with a gently tapering teardrop-shaped body that narrows upward into a biomorphic split mouth resembling a double-spouted opening. The silhouette is smooth, continuous, and tactile, combining fluid asymmetry with modernist restraint. The form evokes a natural object—such as a budding plant or a stylized flame—typical of Nylund’s sculptural vocabulary.

The surface is finished in a deep matte black glaze, consistent and untextured, giving the piece a minimalist and monolithic appearance. This dark, non-reflective surface enhances the purity of form and brings out the play of light and shadow along the vase’s curves. The underside of the vase is signed with the Rörstrand hallmark and Gunnar Nylund’s monogram “GN” along with the impressed model name “Caolina” and “Sweden”.

Gunnar Nylund, one of the most influential Swedish ceramicists of the mid-20th century, served as the artistic director of Rörstrand for several decades. He was known for merging functionalism with expressive form, and for introducing innovative matte glazes and sculptural designs into Scandinavian ceramic production. His Caolina series is notable for its experimental forms and matte finishes, often with organic inspiration and a strong sense of tactile presence.

Rörstrand, established in 1726, is a cornerstone of Swedish ceramic history. During the postwar period, the company gained international acclaim through collaborations with designers like Nylund, who helped define Scandinavian modern aesthetics through ceramics that balanced form, surface, and proportion.

The vase is in good vintage condition, with only minor signs of usage. Its striking silhouette and restrained surface treatment are representative of Scandinavian mid-century design ideals.

The dimensions are 6 cm in diameter and 26 cm in height, corresponding approximately to 2.36 inches in diameter and 10.24 inches in height.
