Gunnar Nylund vase
This rare ceramic vase was designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. Nylund, one of Sweden’s foremost ceramic artists, was known for his refined sense of form and surface, often combining restrained geometry with richly textured glazes. His work for Rörstrand helped define the aesthetic of mid-century Scandinavian ceramics, where technical precision and natural tonal variation coexist in harmony.
The vase features a tall, tapering body that gently widens toward the base before narrowing again to a softly flared rim. The surface is finished in a layered glaze that transitions from deep brown at the lower section to a luminous blue toward the top. The blending of hues and vertical striations creates a sense of movement across the surface, emphasizing the vessel’s vertical rhythm. The interior reveals a similar tonal interplay, highlighting the craftsmanship involved in the glazing process.
This example remains in good vintage condition, showing minimal signs of use. The glaze retains its depth and subtle sheen, with only minor irregularities typical of hand-finished studio pieces. The base bears the incised Rörstrand mark, along with the initials GN and ASM, confirming the piece’s authenticity and origin.
