Gunnar Nylund vases

This pair of Caolina ceramic vases was designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. Each vase exhibits a sculptural, biomorphic form characterized by smooth, elongated curves that open gently toward the top, creating a fluid and organic silhouette. The set includes one in matte white and one in deep matte black, their contrasting tones highlighting the purity of line and symmetry in Nylund’s design. The minimalist surface treatment emphasizes the form itself, a hallmark of mid-century Scandinavian ceramic art.

Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) was one of Sweden’s most celebrated ceramic artists, known for his pioneering role at Rörstrand, where he worked from the 1930s through the 1950s. His designs often combined modernist simplicity with refined craftsmanship, exploring both sculptural and functional approaches to stoneware and porcelain. The Caolina series exemplifies this balance, merging an almost architectural sense of proportion with a distinctly organic softness.
