Gustav Axel Berg easy chair
This rare easy chair, known as the ‘Patronen’ model, was designed by Swedish architect and designer Gustav Axel Berg and produced in Sweden during the 1940s. The chair exemplifies the core values of Scandinavian modernism, combining ergonomic comfort with refined craftsmanship and understated elegance.
The frame of the chair is constructed in solid wood, shaped with a gently curved form that supports a high, contoured backrest and integrated armrests. The backrest features a slight recline and tapering profile, while the seat maintains a broad, inviting surface, emphasizing comfort without excess ornamentation. The sculptural form is characteristic of Berg’s approach, where visual softness is paired with structural logic.
The upholstery is the original webbing. The design remains faithful to functionalist ideals, with proportions that accommodate the human form naturally and a restrained aesthetic that avoids superfluous decoration.
Gustav Axel Berg (1903–1982), also known professionally as G. A. Berg, played a central role in the development of Scandinavian modern design. He was instrumental in articulating the philosophy of functionalism in Sweden and was one of the earliest proponents of what came to be known internationally as “Swedish Modern”. Berg gained international recognition at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, where he introduced the term “Swedish modern” to a global audience. His work, which spans furniture, interiors, and architecture, is characterized by a commitment to simplicity, utility, and finely crafted materials.
Produced during the early 1940s, this chair reflects a transitional moment in Scandinavian design, where traditional joinery and natural materials were combined with new ergonomic insights and international exposure. The form and comfort of the ‘Patronen’ model position it as both a collector’s item and a significant historical example of mid-century Swedish craftsmanship.
The chair measures 80 cm in width, 78 cm in depth, 98.5 cm in height, and 37 cm in seat height. These dimensions correspond approximately to 31.5 inches wide, 30.7 inches deep, 38.8 inches high, and 14.6 inches in seat height.
