Hans Bergström floor lamp
The rare height-adjustable floor lamp, model 541, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. This mid-century piece exemplifies Bergström’s thoughtful integration of function and elegance, showcasing a careful balance of materials, form, and technical refinement. The design reflects his broader approach to lighting, which emphasized both architectural restraint and warm, atmospheric illumination.
Crafted from a combination of brass and grey-lacquered metal, the lamp’s construction contrasts the matte, muted tone of the grey with the rich, reflective surface of the brass. The brass components—used in both the structural detailing and the height-adjustment mechanism—have developed a natural patina over time, contributing to the authenticity and visual warmth of the piece. The mechanical adjustability of the central stem allows the user to modify the lamp’s height smoothly, ranging from 117 cm to 165 cm (approximately 46.1 to 65 inches), making it adaptable for different interior settings and lighting needs.
The shade is conically shaped, finished in white on the exterior and brass-colored on the interior. This dual surface treatment enhances both the visual composition and the quality of light. When illuminated, the reflective interior casts a soft, golden-hued glow, diffusing the light in a warm and inviting manner—ideal for reading or ambient use.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was one of Sweden’s leading lighting designers. His work was characterized by a combination of sculptural sensitivity and industrial precision. Model 541 is representative of his focus on both the technical and emotional dimensions of lighting, incorporating adjustable mechanics within a formally elegant silhouette.
The lamp remains in very good vintage condition, with minor wear and patina on the brass and lacquered surfaces, consistent with careful use over time. These signs of age enhance its historical character and align with its period authenticity.
The dimensions are 22 cm in diameter, 60 cm in depth, and adjustable in height from 117 to 165 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 8.7 inches in diameter, 23.6 inches in depth, and 46.1 to 65 inches in adjustable height.
