Hans Eichenberger easy chairs

This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Hans Eichenberger and produced by Girsberger in Switzerland in 1962. The chairs exemplify the rationalist minimalism and engineering precision that characterize Swiss modernist design during the mid-20th century. Their form combines rigorous structural clarity with restrained material expression.

The frames are composed of stainless steel with a geometric profile. The base uses a crossed leg design that angles outward for structural stability, while visually emphasizing the cantilevered posture of the seat and back. The frame’s finish retains a clean industrial aesthetic, supporting the graphic and linear quality of the silhouette.

The seat and backrest feature deep-button tufted leather cushions in their original black upholstery. The leather is mounted to a substructure of horizontal slats that offer both elasticity and support. The cushions are upholstered in thick, high-quality leather with a semi-gloss finish and characteristic natural creasing and patina from use. The tufting is executed in a regular grid, contributing visual texture and emphasizing the plushness of the seating surface. While the leather remains intact and presentable, there is visible surface wear and discoloration in high-contact areas, consistent with age and regular use.

Hans Eichenberger (b. 1926) is a Swiss architect and designer who played a significant role in shaping modern furniture design in Switzerland. He is known for his functional, clear, and modular aesthetic, often employing metal and leather in reduced forms. Girsberger, his long-time collaborator, was a well-established Swiss manufacturer recognized for precision craftsmanship and quality materials.
