Hans Wegner daybed
This rare daybed, model GE-19, was designed by Danish furniture designer Hans J. Wegner in 1956 and produced by Getama, a manufacturer based in Gedsted, Denmark. Getama is well-known for its longstanding collaboration with Wegner and its reputation for producing high-quality, functionalist furniture within the Danish modern tradition.
The daybed’s frame is crafted from solid oak, featuring rounded edges and softly contoured corners that reveal the wood’s warm natural tone and prominent grain. The mattress is upholstered in black fabric and rests securely on the frame, held in place by integrated brass rails at each short end. These brass details serve as both practical retainers and elegant visual accents. The daybed is elevated on four tapering legs finished in black lacquer, which creates a floating effect and emphasizes the design’s strong horizontal lines.
The construction and proportions reflect Wegner’s dedication to balance, comfort, and utility, core principles of Scandinavian mid-century modernism. The design is minimal yet refined, suitable for both residential and public interiors. Created during a period when Wegner explored simplified, durable forms intended for everyday use, this model remains one of his more architectural and thoughtfully conceived daybeds.
The piece is in very good vintage condition, featuring restored upholstery while retaining its original structural components. It measures 191 centimeters (75.2 inches) in width, 72 centimeters (28.3 inches) in depth, and 44 centimeters (17.3 inches) in height, offering a sleek and functional seating or lounging solution.
