Information

This rare sideboard, model RY-26, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Ry Møbler in Denmark. It is a distinguished example of mid-century Danish cabinetry, reflecting Wegner’s renowned ability to integrate clarity of form, practical utility, and refined materials into unified design statements. The sideboard is constructed from rosewood with brass detailing and internal components in oak, underscoring a rich interplay of textures and tones.

The form is defined by its clean, rectilinear silhouette elevated on slender, tapered legs. This structure contributes to a light, balanced appearance, typical of Danish modernist design during the 1950s and 1960s. The exterior surfaces are clad in rosewood, exhibiting a striking and highly figured grain pattern that shifts across the sliding door fronts in vivid, natural variation. The richness of the rosewood is emphasized by its dark reddish-brown color and subtle luster, both preserved in excellent condition.

The front features two wide sliding doors that reveal an interior composed of open shelving and drawers, crafted from contrasting oak. This internal layout provides versatile storage, suited to both domestic and professional settings. The shelving is adjustable, while the drawers include fine joinery and proportions suited for organizing smaller items or documents. The interior reflects Wegner’s attention to usability without compromising aesthetic integrity.

Brass fittings are used sparingly yet effectively, including in the door hardware and internal drawer pulls. These accents introduce a warm metallic contrast to the dark wood, adding to the visual sophistication of the piece without distracting from its minimalist framework.

In terms of condition, the sideboard is exceptionally well-preserved. The rosewood veneer shows no significant surface wear or discoloration. The brass components maintain their golden tone with only mild patina consistent with age. The structural integrity is sound, and all mechanical elements, including the sliding doors, operate smoothly.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, particularly known for his work in seating and cabinetry. His collaboration with Ry Møbler produced several iconic storage pieces, including the RY series, which embodies his philosophy of merging architectural rigor with a craftsman’s sensitivity to material. Model RY-26 stands as a refined and collectible example of his cabinetmaking legacy.

The sideboard measures 200 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 79 cm in height. In inches, this corresponds approximately to 78.7 inches wide, 19.3 inches deep, and 31.1 inches high.
