Hans Wegner sofa
This sofa and daybed, model GE-258, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in the 1950s and produced by Getama in Gedsted, Denmark. Wegner, one of the foremost figures of Danish modern design, created this piece with his characteristic focus on honest materials, refined construction, and adaptable form. The GE-258 model embodies his belief that furniture should be functional, comfortable, and visually balanced, suitable for both domestic and institutional settings.
The structure is made of solid oak with a warm tone and precise joinery, reflecting Getama’s tradition of craftsmanship and long-standing collaboration with Wegner. The backrest features woven cane panels framed in oak, lending the design a tactile lightness and natural transparency. The woven elements are carefully integrated into the frame with visible joinery details, illustrating Wegner’s deep understanding of materials and his architectural approach to proportion. The seat has been newly reupholstered in blue fabric, providing a vivid contrast to the organic surface of the oak and cane. Metal fittings at the rear support the folding mechanism that allows the backrest to pivot down, transforming the sofa into a daybed — a practical expression of Wegner’s functional minimalism.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition with minor traces of use. The oak frame shows an even tone with subtle patina, the cane is intact and tightly woven, and the upholstery is newly renewed. The overall construction retains structural integrity and clarity of line.
