Harry Booström oil painting
This oil painting, titled “Nr 6” was created by Swedish artist Harry Booström in 1955. The composition features a precise arrangement of geometric shapes in deep blue, green, and white, reflecting the hallmarks of the concretist movement. The sharply defined, angular forms are meticulously structured, producing a dynamic interaction between color and spatial relationships.
The surface reveals textured brushwork typical of oil paint on canvas, with edges of the color fields sharply delineated while occasionally allowing subtle transitions where hues meet. The painting is presented in a simple black wooden frame that accentuates its geometric composition and the vivid contrasts of color.
Harry Booström (1920–1999) was a notable Swedish artist linked to the concretist movement, which emphasized non-representational geometric abstraction. His work demonstrates a disciplined use of form and color, adhering to the principles of concrete art established by figures such as Theo van Doesburg and Max Bill. Booström’s paintings are known for balanced yet dynamic compositions that explore pure color fields and spatial perception.
This particular work was exhibited at the Norrköping Art Museum in Sweden in 2015 as part of a retrospective of Booström’s oeuvre. The back of the canvas carries an inscription reading “NR 6 – 55” confirming its title and date, along with additional markings and a museum label.
Measuring 60.5 cm in width and 60 cm in height (23.8 x 23.6 inches), the painting exemplifies Scandinavian concretism of the mid-20th century, combining precision with vibrant abstraction.
