Information

This rare bureau was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Seffle Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1960s. It exemplifies the refined Scandinavian modern aesthetic, combining functional precision with a warm and understated visual language characteristic of Kofod-Larsen’s work.

The construction utilizes solid oak and oak veneer, finished in a medium golden tone that emphasizes the straight, uniform grain patterns typical of this hardwood species. The design adheres to a strict geometric framework, featuring a rectilinear cabinet raised on four tapered legs that elevate the piece with a sense of lightness. The overall form is compact but provides ample storage, making it suitable for bedroom or office use where elegant and efficient organization is required.

The front of the bureau is composed of six full-width drawers, each defined by integrated horizontal handles carved directly into the upper edge of the drawer fronts. This minimalist approach to hardware preserves the clean and uninterrupted visual plane of the façade, while providing subtle tactile variation. The drawers vary in height, creating a measured rhythm across the front, and are constructed with dovetail joints and solid timber sides, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a Danish designer who gained international recognition, particularly in Sweden and the United States. He was noted for his sophisticated material choices and ergonomic considerations, frequently working with teak, rosewood, and oak. His collaboration with Seffle Möbelfabrik produced several distinguished pieces for the Swedish market, known for their clean lines, integrated detailing, and superior joinery.

This bureau reflects core mid-century Scandinavian design principles, such as visual lightness, refined craftsmanship, and the thoughtful application of natural materials. The design eschews ornamental excess in favor of proportion, material integrity, and subtle curves that convey elegance.

The piece measures 80 cm in width, 50.5 cm in depth, and 93.5 cm in height (approximately 31.5 x 19.9 x 36.8 inches). It is in excellent condition, with the oak surfaces well preserved and recently refinished to a smooth matte sheen. All drawers operate smoothly, and the structure remains solid and square.
