Ib Kofod-Larsen sofa
This rare sofa, which also functions as a daybed, was designed by the Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Seffle Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1960s. It is an excellent example of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, combining refined craftsmanship with functional versatility and a strong architectural character. Kofod-Larsen, known for his sculptural approach to furniture and his meticulous attention to proportion and detail, created pieces that are both elegant and understated, designed to age gracefully over time.
The sofa features a teak frame with warm reddish-brown tones and a finely crafted silhouette typical of Kofod-Larsen’s work. The solid wooden structure rests on slightly tapered legs, giving the piece a light and elevated appearance despite its generous proportions. The backrest is supported by polished steel brackets, a subtle industrial detail that adds a modernist edge while ensuring structural stability. The upholstery is in its original check-patterned fabric in black and beige tones, a striking yet timeless textile choice that reflects the era’s preference for natural materials and tactile surfaces.
The construction is both functional and visually refined. The flat seat and removable back cushions allow the sofa to be easily converted into a daybed, emphasizing the multi-purpose design philosophy that defined Scandinavian furniture in the post-war period. The overall aesthetic is minimalist but not austere, balancing clean lines with organic materials. It bears the hallmarks of Kofod-Larsen’s approach to furniture making: thoughtful ergonomics, a focus on honest materials, and a sensitivity to how a piece occupies and enhances space.
This piece remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and use consistent with over six decades of life, including minor wear and a small area of damage in one corner. Such patina contributes to its authenticity and historical value, underscoring its place as a collectible example of mid-century Scandinavian design.
