Illum Wikkelsø bar cabinet
This mobile bar cabinet, designed in the 1960s by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by CFC Silkeborg in Denmark, presents a masterful balance of organic form and modernist precision. In its closed state, the cabinet is a sleek rectangular block measuring 69.5 cm in width, its softly rounded corners and recessed circular pulls interrupting the rosewood’s continuous grain with subtle sculptural accents. The rich, high-contrast figure of the rosewood veneer—dark streaks dancing across a warm reddish-brown background—remains glossy and deep, the wood’s natural luster preserved by decades of careful maintenance.
Set upon four swiveling chrome-plated steel casters, the cabinet invites effortless mobility, allowing it to glide smoothly across a room when summoned for service. Once the front doors swing open on polished brass piano hinges, the unit nearly doubles in width to 141 cm, revealing a meticulously organized bar interior. The upper section hosts a fold-out serving surface, likely finished in durable black Formica, its dark plane providing both a stage for drink preparation and a striking contrast to the rosewood surrounds.
Beneath this, stepped shelving accommodates glassware of varying heights, while recessed circular bottle holders secure spirits in place. The lower compartment features five black-lined cylindrical openings, each precisely sized to cradle a bottle upright. The doors themselves conceal additional storage: narrow trays for bar tools and compartments for small vessels are integrated into the reverse panels, their workmanship echoing Wikkelsø’s commitment to function woven seamlessly into form.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) is celebrated for injecting warmth and comfort into Danish modernism through sensuous, organic shapes. Although he is best known for sculptural seating, this bar cabinet demonstrates his ability to translate that same language into case furniture—melding smooth, flowing lines with pragmatic detailing. CFC Silkeborg, a leading Danish manufacturer of the era, collaborated with designers like Wikkelsø to realize technically sophisticated pieces, and this cabinet bears the Danish Furnituremakers Control label on its underside as testament to its quality.
The cabinet remains in excellent vintage condition. The rosewood surfaces show only minor surface checks and the faintest wear at the door edges, consistent with decades of careful use. The brass hinges and chrome casters operate with ease, and the black-lined bottle compartments are clean and fully intact. As both a serving station and a sculptural object, this rolling bar unit stands as a rare and refined example of mid-century Danish design.
