Illum Wikkelsø sofa
This very rare three-seat sofa, model V11, was designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Holger Christiansen in Denmark during the 1960s. It is a distinctive example of Scandinavian mid-century design, notable for its architectural clarity, robust proportions, and refined material execution.
The sofa features a solid, rectilinear frame clad in original brown leather, complemented by newly reupholstered loose cushions in matching leather. The leather is supple with a warm cognac tone, displaying a natural surface grain and a light patina consistent with careful age and use. The firm geometry of the frame is subtly softened by the slanted arms and cushioned seat and back, creating a balanced composition that merges functionality with visual presence.
The sofa stands on four tapered legs crafted from solid rosewood, characterized by their broad trapezoidal shape and pronounced vertical grain. The elevated frame and leg design emphasize the sculptural volume of the seat while offering structural stability. The overall silhouette is clean and angular, expressing Wikkelsø’s preference for geometric reduction and ergonomic comfort.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was a prominent Danish designer known for his modernist approach that fused organic form with rational structure. His designs often prioritized functionality, simplicity, and high-quality materials. Wikkelsø was part of the generation that advanced Denmark’s furniture industry internationally during the postwar years, and his work is increasingly sought after for its timeless proportions and sculptural detail.
Holger Christiansen was a Danish manufacturer recognized for producing high-end upholstered furniture during the mid-20th century. Their collaboration with designers like Wikkelsø resulted in limited production models, many of which were produced to exacting standards and are now considered rare collector’s items. This V11 model exemplifies their commitment to craftsmanship, with solid joinery, fine upholstery work, and carefully selected materials.
This sofa is in good vintage condition. The frame retains its original leather surface with signs of use, including gentle creasing and slight abrasions, consistent with age. The seat and back cushions have been reupholstered in new leather, closely matched to the original in tone and texture. The rosewood legs remain structurally sound with a clean, rich finish.
