Information

This early “Maija the Bee” floor lamp, model Mehiläinen, stands at 136.5 cm in height with a shade diameter of 14 cm (approximately 53.7 in by 5.5 in). Its slender profile is defined by a straight vertical stem and tripod base, presenting a balanced composition that draws the eye upward to the tiered shade.

The shade itself is composed of a series of stacked, horizontal metal discs painted in a crisp white enamel. Each disc is separated by a narrow gap, creating a louvered effect that references the segmented body of a honeybee and allows light to diffuse in soft, layered bands both above and below. Small brass terminals at the top of the shade introduce a discreet accent, their warm metallic tone contrasting with the cool white finish. Below the shade, the stem is wrapped in a fine coil of natural cane, seamlessly marrying the industrial metalwork with a textural, organic element.

The lower stem and tripod legs are formed from slender tubular steel, also finished in white lacquer. Each leg terminates in a small disc foot, ensuring stability while preserving an overall sense of visual lightness. The geometry of the tripod base provides a secure foundation without detracting from the lamp’s vertical emphasis.

Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) was a leading figure of Finnish humanistic modernism. His designs are celebrated for their clarity of form, functional integrity, and sensitivity to materials. Having collaborated briefly with Alvar Aalto, Tapiovaara went on to create furnishings and lighting that brought refined, accessible modernism into both public and private interiors. “Maija the Bee” exemplifies his skill at reinterpreting natural motifs through rational, geometric structures.

Hienoteräs, the Finnish metalworks firm responsible for producing this model, specialized in post-war metal furniture and lighting. Their expertise in precision fabrication allowed designers like Tapiovaara to explore new forms in steel and brass, resulting in innovative products that remain highly collectible today.

This example is in very good vintage condition. The white enamel shows only minor surface wear and faint scratches consistent with age. The cane wrapping remains intact with subtle darkening, and the brass details exhibit a gentle patina. All joints and mechanical components function correctly, preserving both the structural integrity and the aesthetic harmony of the original design.
