Information

This mid-century flat-weave carpet was designed by Ingrid Dessau and produced in Sweden. The textile presents a rectilinear layout composed of irregular rectangular fields in a harmonious palette of blues, teal, turquoise, ivory, and slate. The design incorporates both solid and textured woven areas, with some sections featuring wavy or striated weft patterns that add depth and rhythm to the geometric composition, reflecting a balanced modernist aesthetic.

Woven by hand in wool using the traditional Swedish “rölakan” technique, the carpet is reversible with a durable flat surface. It is bordered by a narrow ivory frame and finished with a darker woven edge in teal. The woven initials “ID” in the lower left corner confirm Ingrid Dessau’s authorship.

Ingrid Dessau (1923–2000), a significant figure in Swedish textile design, trained at Konstfack and was active from the 1940s onward. She is renowned for her integration of modernist formalism with traditional weaving methods, and her collaborations with notable manufacturers such as Kasthall and Märta Måås-Fjetterström helped elevate Swedish textile art internationally in the mid-20th century.

This carpet is in excellent vintage condition, with vibrant fibers and no significant wear or staining, exemplifying the enduring quality of Scandinavian handwoven textiles.

Dimensions: 230 cm wide by 160 cm deep (approximately 90.6 x 63 inches).
