Jacob Kjær chest of drawers
This very rare chest of drawers was designed by Jacob Kjær and produced in his own cabinetmaking workshop in Denmark in 1946. Executed in rosewood with brass details and oak-lined drawers, the piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and material sensitivity associated with Danish master cabinetmakers of the mid-20th century. Kjær, who was both a designer and highly skilled cabinetmaker, is known for his restrained yet sophisticated furniture, where proportions, joinery, and material selection are treated with exceptional precision.
The cabinet is constructed in richly figured rosewood, displaying a vivid grain pattern with deep brown tones and contrasting darker streaks. The drawer fronts are carefully bookmatched, creating a balanced and continuous visual rhythm across the façade. This attention to grain selection and alignment reflects a high level of cabinetmaking discipline, emphasizing both symmetry and the natural beauty of the material. The sides and back are equally well executed, allowing the piece to function as a freestanding object, finished on all sides.
The chest features four spacious drawers, each fitted with elegantly shaped brass handles that introduce a subtle decorative element against the darker wood. The drawers retain their original locks and keys, further underlining the quality and completeness of the piece. Internally, the drawers are crafted in oak, providing a warm tonal contrast and a durable, functional interior. The joinery is precise and traditional, indicative of hand-finished cabinet work.
The cabinet rests on a separate, finely constructed base with rounded legs and stretchers, also in solid wood, terminating in brass-capped feet. This elevated structure gives the piece a lighter visual presence despite its solid construction, while also highlighting the architectural clarity of the design. The transition between the cabinet body and the base is handled with subtle detailing, reinforcing the overall sense of balance and proportion.
Jacob Kjær was among the leading figures in Danish cabinetmaking during the early modern period, and his workshop was known for producing furniture of the highest standard, often exhibited at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibitions. Pieces such as this demonstrate the transition from traditional craftsmanship to modern design principles, where ornament is reduced and the focus is placed on form, material, and execution.
The chest measures 96 cm in width, 48.5 cm in depth, and 106.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 37.8 inches, 19.1 inches, and 41.9 inches respectively. It remains in excellent condition, with only minor signs of age and use, consistent with careful preservation over time.
