Jacob Kjær dining chairs
This set of 16 dining chairs, model “Paris”, was designed by the renowned Danish architect and cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær in 1937. Characterized by their refined lines and attention to materiality, these chairs exemplify the intersection of Danish functionalism and classical craftsmanship. The design is visually understated yet rich in detail, featuring gently tapered legs, rounded vertical back slats, and a carefully contoured seat frame that speaks to Kjær’s background in both cabinetmaking and furniture architecture.
The chairs are constructed from solid Cuban mahogany, a hardwood prized for its fine grain and deep, reddish-brown hue. The warm patina of the wood has matured beautifully over time, revealing subtle tonal variations and lustrous depth. The seat upholstery is in original Niger leather, a rare vegetable-tanned material with a characteristically smooth texture and natural markings. Each seat is bordered by hand-applied brass rivets that not only secure the leather but also accentuate the geometric clarity of the construction.
Jacob Kjær, active in the first half of the 20th century, was instrumental in shaping Danish modern furniture. Educated as both a cabinetmaker and architect, he became known for his elegant, handcrafted furniture and was notably appointed to design furniture for the Danish Foreign Ministry and embassies. His approach often merged classical influences with the clarity and economy of form that would later define Scandinavian modernism.
These chairs were produced in Kjær’s own workshop, a rarity even in his time, where he maintained direct control over quality and joinery. As such, they represent not only a historic design but also a material testimony to the artisan-led production typical of the pre-industrial Danish cabinetmaking tradition.
The chairs are in good vintage condition, with signs of wear consistent with their age and use. The leather seats display a rich patina and some natural creasing, adding visual depth and authenticity. The wooden frames show light marks and minor variations in tone, which further enhance their historical character without compromising structural integrity.
