Jens Quistgaard ashtray
Ceramic ashtray designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard and produced by Kronjyden in Denmark. The underside carries the circular “Danmark – Kronjyden” factory mark together with Quistgaard’s monogram, confirming the attribution. Quistgaard designed a broader group of ceramic smoking accessories for Kronjyden, including cigar and tobacco containers and corresponding ashtrays.
The ashtray has a low rectangular form with softly rounded corners and a raised perimeter rim. It is finished in a dark blue-grey to charcoal-grey glaze, with subtle tonal variation around the edges and recesses. Across the recessed central field, the word “ASKE” — Danish for “ash” — is impressed repeatedly in tightly spaced horizontal rows. The pale lettering contrasts with the dark glaze and forms a continuous typographic grid across the surface. Related Quistgaard smoking accessories use the same principle, with words such as “CIGAR” or “CIGARET” repeated according to the intended function of each object.
The composition is based almost entirely on rectangular geometry. The broad outer rim follows the proportions of the central recessed field, while the corners and long sides curve slightly rather than meeting as sharp right angles. Seen from above, the repeated lettering introduces a smaller and more regular geometric rhythm within this simple outline. The underside continues the dark glaze except for a circular unglazed area containing the Kronjyden mark.
Jens Harald Quistgaard (1919–2008) was a Danish designer whose work encompassed ceramics, wood, metal, glass and tableware. His approach frequently treated the material, construction and function of domestic objects as visible elements of the design. His ceramic work for Kronjyden included several tableware patterns and smaller household objects, with documented Kronjyden production by Quistgaard dating from the 1950s onward.
It measures 23 × 14 × 3 cm, corresponding to approximately 9.1 × 5.5 × 1.2 inches. It is in good vintage condition with small signs of use.
