Information

This sculptural candlestick, designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard and produced by Dansk Designs in Denmark during the 1950s, is a striking example of mid-century Scandinavian Brutalist design. Crafted from solid cast iron, it features integrated brass spacers that separate the segmented vertical structure, creating a rhythmic and tactile contrast between the materials.

The design presents a spine-like column composed of stacked, faceted nodes tapering between seven conical candleholders, each with sharply downturned, flared holders for taper candles. The piece stands on a wide circular base for stability, with a distinctive looped finial crowning the top, adding an expressive flourish to its otherwise raw, architectural form.

The cast iron surface carries a dark brown-black patina with oxidation and rust spots typical of its age and material. The brass rings exhibit a mellow aged tone, enhancing the interplay of color and texture. Despite surface wear and oxidation, the candlestick remains structurally sound and complete.

Jens Harald Quistgaard (1919–2008), founder designer of Dansk Designs, was instrumental in introducing Danish modernism to the U.S. market. His work balances sculptural qualities with practical function, and this piece exemplifies his early exploration of industrial materials merged with handcrafted detail.

Dimensions are 18 cm in diameter and 47 cm in height (7.1 x 18.5 inches), making it a substantial and sculptural decorative object suitable for a centerpiece or accent in a modern interior.
