Jo Hammerborg ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model Nordlys, was designed by Jo Hammerborg and produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark during the 1950s. Hammerborg, a leading figure in Danish lighting design, was known for his modernist approach that combined sculptural forms with refined functionality. His work for Fog & Mørup helped shape the mid-century Scandinavian lighting aesthetic, blending material warmth with architectural precision.
The lamp is constructed from a harmonious mix of teak, opaline glass, and brass — materials that reflect the high-quality craftsmanship characteristic of Danish design in the period. The elongated teak frame anchors the piece visually, while the series of cylindrical opaline glass shades diffuse light evenly, creating a soft and atmospheric glow. Brass fittings add a subtle contrast and an elegant metallic accent, enhancing the lamp’s refined appearance.
Designed to serve as a striking centerpiece, the Nordlys model’s linear composition and symmetrical arrangement make it particularly suited for dining areas, large living spaces, or public interiors. Its sculptural silhouette and careful material interplay embody the timeless principles of Scandinavian modernism — functionality, simplicity, and natural beauty.
