Johannes Aasbjerg & Sophie Eskild coffee table
This is a very rare coffee table designed by Johannes Aasbjerg and Sophie Eskild, produced in Denmark during the 1960s. The construction combines industrial and artistic materials in a striking and balanced form. The tabletop is composed of a grid of individual enamel tiles, each with a unique surface treatment that blends hues of oxidized copper, turquoise blue, cobalt, earth brown, black, and patches of white and green. The variation in tone and texture across the surface gives the piece a painterly quality and emphasizes its handcrafted nature. The enamel tiles are mounted within a patinated copper frame, which extends vertically to form the supporting structure.
The base is composed of squared, solid legs in patinated metal, contributing to the table’s graphic linearity. The feet are capped in rosewood, which contrasts subtly with the metallic structure, adding a layer of warmth and refined material complexity. The overall profile is rectangular and low, emphasizing horizontality in a minimalist silhouette. Despite the austerity of the form, the table has a vivid presence due to the luminous, glazed tile surface.
The enamel work is signed “Sophie Eskild” visible in one corner of the tabletop, confirming the involvement of the Danish artist known for her work in fused glass and ceramics. Sophie Eskild was active during the mid-20th century and often collaborated with designers and architects to integrate artisan craft into functional furnishings. The table was retailed by Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen, as evidenced by the original metal label affixed to the underside.
This piece is in good vintage condition with minor signs of usage including surface irregularities and patina on the metal elements, consistent with age. The enamel tiles are intact and retain their gloss and coloration, while the patinated copper exhibits a deep, aged tonality with some oxidation that is typical for the material.
The dimensions of the table are 151.5 cm in width, 51 cm in depth, and 50 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 59.6 inches wide, 20.1 inches deep, and 19.7 inches high.
