Johannes Andersen dining table
This dining table was designed in 1968 by Johannes Andersen and produced by Hans Bech in Denmark. It is crafted in rosewood, a material highly prized in Scandinavian mid-century furniture for its rich grain patterns and depth of color. The table presents a dark brown surface with subtle reddish undertones, highlighted by flowing natural wood grains that give it both warmth and sophistication. Its oval top rests on two sculptural pedestal bases, each constructed with four vertical supports joined by angular feet, creating a stable yet visually open structure. The design balances organic materiality with geometric precision, characteristic of Andersen’s approach to functional elegance.
The table is extendable, transforming from a compact round dining table into a large oval configuration. This versatility reflects the practical needs of modern Scandinavian living in the 1960s, where furniture was expected to adapt to both intimate and social settings. The extension system is concealed, ensuring that the table maintains a refined profile whether closed or fully extended.
Johannes Andersen was a Danish designer known for his meticulous craftsmanship and his ability to merge sculptural qualities with functional utility. Much of his work aligns with the broader mid-century Scandinavian design movement, which emphasized simplicity, durability, and timeless form. Hans Bech, the producer, collaborated with Andersen and other leading designers of the era, ensuring high-quality execution and fine material selection, particularly in rosewood pieces that remain sought after today.
The table has been carefully restored and is in excellent vintage condition, showing only light traces of usage and a natural patina consistent with age. The restoration has preserved the depth of the rosewood surface, allowing the expressive patterns of the veneer to be fully appreciated.
Dimensions: The table measures 128 cm in diameter (50.4 inches) and extends to 305 cm (120.1 inches) in length, with a height of 72 cm (28.3 inches). This allows it to serve both as a round dining table for smaller gatherings and as a large banquet table when fully extended.
