Johannes Andersen sideboard
This very rare sideboard, model HB20, designed by Johannes Andersen and produced by Hans Bech in Denmark in 1968, stands as a distinguished example of Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture. The piece highlights organic forms, meticulous craftsmanship, and functional elegance, all hallmarks of the era.
Crafted from rosewood, the sideboard showcases the wood’s deep, rich tones and striking grain patterns. The symmetrical front design includes two doors on either side, each featuring organically shaped recessed handles. Centrally positioned are four drawers with gently curved fronts that blend seamlessly into the overall composition. The sideboard rests on a sculptural base with arched crossbars, imparting a sense of visual lightness despite its considerable length.
Johannes Andersen, a Danish architect and furniture designer, was renowned for his innovative use of form and detail. His designs often featured curved, flowing lines that distinguished his work from the more rigid geometric styles typical of mid-century Scandinavian furniture. His collaboration with Hans Bech produced some of his most refined pieces, marrying practical storage with artistic expression.
Hans Bech, the manufacturer, was known for high-quality craftsmanship and partnerships with leading designers, contributing significantly to Danish furniture production.
The sideboard measures approximately 240 centimeters in width, 50 centimeters in depth, and 85 centimeters in height (94.5 x 19.7 x 33.5 inches). It remains in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with its age, preserving its authentic character.
