Information

This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Swedish architect and designer John Kandell in 1956. It was originally installed in the sacristy of S:t Nicolai Chapel in Helsingborg, Sweden. The lamp is constructed from elm wood, thin translucent plastic film, and fishing line, reflecting Kandell’s architectural precision, interest in material contrasts, and his subtle incorporation of ecclesiastical context within a modernist design language.

The fixture is composed of a square wooden frame built from solid elm with visible joinery and carefully spaced perforations that emphasize structural rhythm and lightness. The vertical elements are extended at the top into projecting fins that echo Japanese and Scandinavian architectural vernaculars, evoking a blend of traditional joinery and minimalist construction. These vertical posts are linked by a perforated horizontal band on both top and bottom edges, giving visual balance to the otherwise vertically-oriented design. The sides of the lamp are enclosed by thin, slightly frosted plastic panels, which serve as diffusers to soften the light and contribute to a warm ambient glow when lit.

The use of materials—solid elm, flexible plastic, and tensioned fishing line—demonstrates Kandell’s experimental ethos and commitment to material honesty. The structural components are visible and unadorned, celebrating the integrity of the construction. The suspension is achieved with fine fishing lines that create the illusion of the body floating below the ceiling, enhancing the lamp’s sculptural and architectural presence.

John Kandell, known for his work in furniture, architecture, and lighting, was active in mid-20th-century Sweden and remains especially appreciated for his experimental and thoughtful spatial compositions. His work often bridges the poetic and the rational, and this lamp is a compelling example of his ability to create expressive form with minimal means.

The lamp is preserved in excellent condition with original components intact, and displays minor, even patina and wear consistent with age.

The dimensions of the lamp are 23 cm by 23 cm at the base, and 95 cm in total height. These measurements correspond to approximately 9.06 inches by 9.06 inches in plan, and 37.4 inches in overall height.
