Josef Frank cabinet
Very rare cabinet model 881, also known as the “Nationalmuseiskåpet”, designed by Josef Frank in 1938 and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1990s. This highly celebrated cabinet model stands among the most iconic and sought-after creations within Josef Frank’s oeuvre and Svenskt Tenn’s production history. The cabinet gained its colloquial name after being exhibited at the landmark 1952 exhibition “Josef Frank – 20 Years at Svenskt Tenn” at Sweden’s Nationalmuseum, where the museum acquired an example for its permanent collection. Since then, the model has become emblematic of Frank’s imaginative and sophisticated approach to furniture design, balancing refined craftsmanship with playful asymmetry and architectural precision.
The cabinet is executed in richly figured mahogany veneer with dramatic burl patterns across the façade, sides, and top, contrasted by a solid walnut stand and subtle brass hardware. The striking composition of differently sized drawers creates a rhythmic geometric arrangement characteristic of Josef Frank’s expressive yet highly controlled design language. The warm reddish-brown tones of the mahogany veneer display exceptional depth and movement, while the walnut base introduces a lighter and more restrained structural counterpoint. Brass pulls of varying scale further accentuate the cabinet’s sculptural appearance and reinforce its functional complexity.
Raised on an elegant freestanding walnut base with stretcher support, the cabinet appears visually light despite its highly architectural form. The proportions and refined detailing reveal Frank’s ability to merge Viennese modernism with Scandinavian cabinetmaking traditions. The cabinet functions equally well as a statement storage piece, collector’s object, or sculptural focal point within both modern and classical interiors.
The condition is very good vintage condition with light and age-appropriate signs of use. The veneer presents beautifully with a vivid and well-preserved surface throughout, and the interior drawers remain clean and functional. The cabinet retains an excellent overall appearance with strong color saturation and fine patina to the brass fittings.
