Josef Frank dining chairs
This set of six chairs and four armchairs, model 1165, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. The chairs feature a refined frame crafted from mahogany, with a backrest composed of cane elements arranged in a series of delicate arches. The armchairs seats are upholstered in horsehair and the 6 dining chairs are upholstered in brown wool fabric. The warm tones of the mahogany contrast with the upholstery, creating an elegant visual balance. The frame is constructed with clean lines and subtle curves, with the armchairs distinguished by gracefully extended armrests that integrate seamlessly into the structure.
Josef Frank, an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer, was known for his modernist approach that embraced comfort, craftsmanship, and a departure from strict functionalism. His work at Svenskt Tenn redefined Swedish interior aesthetics, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary forms. Model 1165 was introduced in 1947, reflecting Frank’s characteristic balance between structure and ornamentation.
Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, became one of Sweden’s most influential design houses, especially after Josef Frank joined in 1934. His designs introduced a softer, more eclectic modernism, diverging from the stark minimalism of the era. The chairs from this set exhibit his signature approach, where natural materials and decorative details create a sense of warmth and livability. The set remains in excellent condition, with a well-preserved finish on the mahogany and intact cane detailing.
The dimensions for the standard chairs are 46 cm wide, 57 cm deep, and 84 cm high (18.1 x 22.4 x 33.1 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). The armchairs measure 56.5 cm in width, 58 cm in depth, and 84 cm in height (22.2 x 22.8 x 33.1 inches), also with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches).
