Josef Frank dressing table
This rare freestanding dressing table or desk was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted from mahogany with brass details, it reflects Frank’s distinctive approach to furniture design, combining functional elegance with a sense of lightness and refinement.
The desk features a rectangular structure supported by a slender wooden frame, with horizontal stretchers that enhance its stability. The top surface is accented by a green inset bordered by a raised wooden gallery, which serves both as a practical writing surface and a decorative contrast to the warm mahogany frame. On the left side, a three-drawer unit with brass U-shaped handles provides storage, while the right side houses a cabinet door with a brass keyhole, offering additional versatility. The back panel is fully finished, allowing the piece to be positioned freely within a room.
Josef Frank, a pivotal figure in Swedish modernism, rejected the strict functionalism of his contemporaries in favor of softer, more organic design principles. His work with Svenskt Tenn combined traditional craftsmanship with modernist ideals, resulting in designs that are both timeless and highly valued.
This piece exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian modern design through its clean lines, thoughtful material selection, and practical construction. The harmonious combination of mahogany and brass details imparts a sophisticated yet understated aesthetic.
The desk measures 134 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height (52.8 x 17.7 x 28 inches). It remains in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with its age and use.
