Josef Frank floor lamp
This is a rare floor lamp, model number 2148, designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is executed in solid brass, featuring a slender cylindrical stem rising from a weighted circular base. The base and stem exhibit a warm, aged patina consistent with mid-century brass, showing minor surface marks and discoloration typical of vintage use. The socket housing is mounted to accommodate twin bulb fittings, positioned at slight angles for optimal light diffusion. The lamp retains its original electrical components, as evident in the visible wear and aged finish of the socket area.
The shade, not included with the sale, is shown here in a pleated cream-colored fabric of conical form, highlighting the lamp’s compatibility with traditional Scandinavian shade styles. The total shape emphasizes vertical elegance, with the conical shade creating a visual counterbalance to the linearity of the shaft. This construction typifies Frank’s design approach, where refined form meets functional craftsmanship.
Josef Frank (1885–1967) was an Austrian-born architect and designer who became a seminal figure in Swedish design after emigrating in the 1930s. His work with Svenskt Tenn, particularly under the guidance of Estrid Ericson, helped establish a distinctly Swedish modernism that combined vibrant materials with a humanistic, less rigid aesthetic. Frank’s lighting designs often balanced traditional formality with subtle whimsy and practicality, as seen in this piece.
Svenskt Tenn, established in Stockholm in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, became a major platform for progressive interior design in the 20th century. The company was known for its high standards in both artistic direction and manufacturing, particularly during Frank’s long collaboration, which shaped the identity of the firm.
This example stands in good vintage condition with light wear appropriate to its age and use. Signs of oxidation and patina are visible on the brass surface and interior socket fittings.
Dimensions are 150 cm in height and 19 cm in diameter at the base, equivalent to approximately 59 inches high by 7.5 inches in diameter.
